Things You May Learn From A Pre-Placement Talk

On January 19, 2018, while coordinating one of the placement drives, I got an opportunity to listen to one of the HR Recruiters of GESTAMP Automobile Chennai Pvt Ltd. and I was amazed to come across this wonderful personality from whom I learned various good lessons during this talk.
He grabbed my attention when he said, "After listening to the Pre Placement Talk, if you wish to walk out of the hall without giving an interview, that would also be fine because it is an industry and we would like to keep it professional and transparent."
Gradually, he shared one of the most interesting stories that I have ever heard which is as follows:
"Once upon a time, a shoe company sent two salesmen to Africa to determine the market potential for their products. One salesman was sent to the east coast of Africa, while the other salesman was sent to the west coast of Africa. Both the salesmen completed a basic survey of the target market and called back to the office. The salesman sent to the east coast of Africa reported “No one here wears any shoes, there is no market for us here!”. The other salesman sent a message “No one here wears any shoes, there is a huge market for us, send inventory fast!”
"Two persons from same city, same course, same batch, same university but the difference is Mindset", he continued.
To my surprise, he compared this situation with students who may have to move to a different state in order to pursue career with this company, and it was their choice whether to see an opportunity or no scope at the location.
Later, he explained about Chennai as the growing market for business and various professionals.
Finally, he showed us a 10-minute video in which a blend of Struggle, Team Work, Perseverance , etc. was presented using clips from various movies including Lagaan and their application in Management.
All in all, this was one of the very few Pre Placement Talks which I will always remember.

Other Things I Learned Today:
  1. You should not give up on yourself without appearing for an interview.
  2. Be confident to get selected in the company you are applying for.
  3. Do not care about number of vacancies, rather focus on your own performance in an interview.
  4. It is very important to raise at least one query in the Pre-Placement Talk, it will create an edge for you out of 150 students. You can imagine how much fruitful it can be.
  5. Keep your eyes and ears open, i.e. Listen Attentively.
